Gita Jayanti 2026: date, meaning and how to mark it

By Siddharth Sharma, creator of Kanha. Updated .

Gita Jayanti 2026 falls on Sunday, 20 December 2026. It is the day people remember Krishna speaking the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna, and the usual way to mark it is to read some of it.

The short answer: Gita Jayanti is kept on the eleventh day of the bright fortnight of Margashirsha, the same day as Mokshada Ekadashi. In 2026 that is Sunday, 20 December. The date moves every year because it follows the lunar calendar.

What the day marks

According to the Mahabharata, Krishna spoke the Gita to Arjuna at Kurukshetra, in present-day Haryana, as two armies stood ready to fight. Gita Jayanti is the anniversary of that conversation. Tradition places it more than five thousand years ago. Scholars usually date the written text to around two thousand years ago, so you will meet both numbers. For the story itself, see what the Bhagavad Gita is about.

Gita Jayanti and Mokshada Ekadashi

The same day is Mokshada Ekadashi, the Ekadashi of Margashirsha, a fast kept for Vishnu. The two are separate observances that share a date. Many households keep the fast and read the Gita on the same day. If you do only one of them, that is fine.

How people mark it

  • Reading or reciting the Gita, a single chapter or all of it, at home, in schools and in temples.
  • Recitations and talks at temples and study groups.
  • Keeping the Mokshada Ekadashi fast.
  • Kurukshetra, where the Gita is said to have been spoken, holds a large festival around this time, the International Gita Mahotsav.
  • Sharing a favourite verse with someone.

Short on time: five verses

No time for a chapter a day? These five are the ones people look for most.

  • 2.47: Your job is the effort. The outcome was never yours to hold onto.
  • 2.20: The soul was never born, so it never dies. The body ends. It doesn't.
  • 4.7: When right living declines and wrong takes over, Krishna says he steps in.
  • 9.22: Single-minded devotion comes with a direct promise, not a vague sense of general goodwill.
  • 18.66: Let go of every other duty and surrender, Krishna says. The promise is freedom, and no more grief.

Words to send

A verse travels better than a forward. Here are four short ones you can paste into a message:

  • Happy Gita Jayanti. Your job is the effort. The outcome was never yours to hold onto. (Bhagavad Gita 2.47)
  • Happy Gita Jayanti. Pleasure and pain come and go. Learn to sit with both. (Bhagavad Gita 2.14)
  • Happy Gita Jayanti. Your mind can lift you up or drag you down. Which one it does depends on how you train it. (Bhagavad Gita 6.5)
  • Happy Gita Jayanti. Let go of every other duty and surrender, Krishna says. The promise is freedom, and no more grief. (Bhagavad Gita 18.66)

Frequently asked questions

When is Gita Jayanti in 2026?

Sunday, 20 December 2026. It falls on the eleventh day of the bright fortnight of Margashirsha, the same day as Mokshada Ekadashi.

What does Gita Jayanti celebrate?

The day Krishna is said to have spoken the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, just before the war began. It marks the Gita being given, not a person's birthday.

Is Gita Jayanti the same as Mokshada Ekadashi?

They fall on the same day but are two observances. Mokshada Ekadashi is a fast kept for Vishnu. Gita Jayanti marks the Gita being spoken and is kept mainly by reading it.

Why does the date change every year?

It follows the Hindu lunar calendar, not the fixed Gregorian one, so the date moves each year and usually lands in November or December.

How can I mark Gita Jayanti at home?

Read or recite a chapter or the whole Gita, or read a few verses and think about one of them. Some people also keep the Ekadashi fast or join a recitation at a temple. There is no single required way.

Do I have to fast on Gita Jayanti?

No. Fasting belongs to Mokshada Ekadashi and is a personal and family choice. You can read the Gita on this day without it.
